Krol, Natalie. The Literary City of Havana and the Restoration of Culture in the Writing of Abilio Estévez.  / La ciudad literaria de La Habana y la restauración de la cultura en la escritura de Abilio Estévez p. 835-852 Cuba

Resumen

This article redresses the lack of critical attention to contemporary Cuban narratives that strive to reconcile an inherited cultural symbology with the perceived deficiencies of the present. While dollar fiction, dirty realism and the new detective novel expose some of the paradoxes of Cuba's Special Period, other texts seek to recover a more inclusive literary heterotopia from the site of a crumbling socialist utopia. These refracted cultural responses enter into dialogue with the poets who collaborated in the production of the literary magazine Orígenes (1944-1956). A key exponent of this trend is Abilio Estévez (b. 1954, in exile in Spain since 2002). The narrator of Los palacios distantes (2002) mourns the inconsistencies between the everyday city of Havana and the literary cities desired by the characters. Yet by negotiating Havana's ruins, the foundations of the urban palimpsest can be converted into a new representational space.

Rivera, Fernando. Writing the Sexual-Cultural Encounter in the Andes: La hora azul by Alonso Cueto.  / Escritura del encuentro sexual-cultural en los Andes: La hora azul de Alonso Cueto p. 853-866 Perú

Resumen

This article studies the scene of sexual-cultural encounter in Peruvian narratives. It takes the circumstances of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega's birth as a historical model in order to describe the structure of this encounter, the power relationships at play and the presence of discourses in tension. Then, a close reading of La hora azul (2005) by Alonso Cueto discloses the particularities of this encounter in the context of the Peruvian Internal War (1980-2000). This novel addresses the relationship between an upper-class lawyer and a young peasant woman held as a sexual slave during the war by the lawyer's father. The objective here is to analyse the discourses this encounter makes visible in terms of (Oedipal) kinship and bourgeois morality; the sense of responsibility and its political significance; and the assessment of the Internal War as a historical event that the novel suggests in a world context of globalization.
