Rodríguez-Falcón, Olga. The Lumpen and the Popular: Guillermo Cabrera Infante and Julio García Espinosa . p. 465-479 Cuba
Diversidad cultural / Mestizaje / Cultura popular
Siglo XX

This article deals with the post-1959 re-definitions of the concept of ‘popular culture’ and its relation to the cultural legacy of Havana's nightlife during the 1950s. After the 1959 Revolution, many Euro-Cuban cultural producers saw and represented the cultural expressions of the Afro-Cuban poor in the capital as being central to Cuban ‘popular culture’. This article focuses mainly on two Euro-Cuban authors, writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante and filmmaker Julio García Espinosa, whose works during the first years of the 1960s were highly influenced by Havana's nightlife culture. What both authors shared was a view of the nocturnal in Havana as the heterotopical space and time—following Foucault's concept of ‘heterotopia’ (1998: 175-185)—where the divisions between high and low art in Cuba could be transcended through the encounters of the different cultural traditions then cohabiting in the city.

Aponte-García, Maribel. Foreign Investment and Trade in Cuban Development: A 50-Year Reassessment with Emphasis on the Post-1990 Period . p. 480-496 Cuba
Desarrollo cubano / Inversión extranjera y desarrollo / Inversión extranjera y comercio
Siglo XX | Siglo XXI

This article provides a 50-year reassessment of foreign investment and trade in Cuba and locates this analysis within Cuban debates on development and the economics of transition. Transformations contextualised in these debates cover three periods. The 1959–1989 period was characterised by nationalisations and expropriations, the imposition of the US trade embargo, and the trade and economic assistance agreements signed with the Soviet Union. The Special Period crisis emerged in the 1990s and Cuba had to turn to foreign investment and alternative trade options while continuing to reject the adoption of open regionalism and neoliberal policies. The 2005–2008 period was characterised by Cuba's incorporation into the Bolivarian Alternative, a new regional integration model.

kirk, John M. Cuba's Medical Internationalism: Development and Rationale . p. 497-511 Cuba
Diplomacia médica / Internacionalismo médico cubano
Siglo XX | Siglo XXI

Since 1960, Cuba has been involved in providing medical support to the developing world, and at present has some 40,000 personnel in 74 countries – more than all of the G-8 countries combined. This article traces the evolution from its first (1960) mission to the current stage. The article also analyses various explanations for this extraordinary mixture of diplomacy and humanitarianism.

Wood, David . Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and the Art of Revolutionary Cinema . p. 512-526 Cuba
Cine / Cultura / Revolución
Siglo XX

Tomás Gutiérrez Alea has been widely acclaimed for his cinematic production and for his role as a key figure in the elaboration of a distinctively Cuban aesthetic. Drawing on notions such as Martín-Barbero's mediations, Billig's banal nationalism, and Gutiérrez Alea's own viewer's dialectic, consideration is given here to the mutual influences of the Revolution's cultural policies on cinema, and of cinema on the Revolution. Analysis will focus on the films Memorias del subdesarrollo (1968), Hasta cierto punto (1983), Fresa y chocolate (1993) and Guantanamera (1995), which will allow for discussion of some of the director's key themes, including gender issues, the place and role of intellectuals and artists in relation to the Revolution, and the defence of a critical space in which to explore such issues.

Democratización cultural / Castro / Cuba
Siglo XX

This article re-reads Fidel Castro's speech to Cuban artists and intellectuals at the Biblioteca Nacional José Martí (National Library) in June 1961. Despite extensive discussion of its famous extract, the speech has rarely been examined in depth. This article thus analyses the entire speech, situating it within its co-text and its context and examining its multiple functions, offering as it does an insight into the social and educational implications of cultural revolution in Cuba and the inevitable tensions inherent in these. The article evaluates the negotiations in the text in the light of their relevance to contemporary cultural debates in Cuba.

Ludlam, Steve. Cuban Labour at 50: What About the Workers? . p. 542-557 Cuba
Ley de empleo / Trabajadores / Cuba
Siglo XX | Siglo XXI

Cuba is reforming its employment relations as it emerges from the economic crisis and restructuring of the 1990s. Employment relations are one key indicator of the state of Cuba's socialist ambition as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Revolution. Several key aspects of recent employment law and salary reform are discussed. It is argued that, within a state-dominated economy, Cuba's workers and trade unions continue to exercise real influence, both in national policy-making and in workplaces.
