Brief historical

Redial In 1988, responding to the National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS) in France, Latinamericanist and European centers for the research and scientific information gathered together for the 46th International congress of Americanism that took place in Amsterdam, in order to organize the Symposium of “Information scientific systems and Social and Human sciences specialized in Latin America in Europe: a balance for a European cooperation."

During this symposium, it was agreed to establish a European network which goal is to follow and improve the European latin-americanist research, leding to a creation of documentary collective tools in order to facilitate the exchange of scientific information specialized in Latin America produced in Europe.

In order to formalize and to implement the agreements decided in Amsterdam, an European meeting (known as the Reunion of Madrid) was organized on the Spanish capital on the 6th and 7th of March of 1989 at the CSIC headquarter (Consejo Superior de Investigacion Centifica). 35 European institutions of study, research and documentation on Latin America took part in. An action plan was held in order to found an international association to ensure the continuity of works and the developpment of objectives. A Coordinating Committee was appointed on an interim basis, with a commitment to draft a Constitution.

The REDIAL constituent assembly took place in France (Bordeaux-Talence and Saint-Emlion) on the 30th of November and on the 1st and 2nd of December of 1989. The founding members were 35 research centers, libraries, documentation centers, NGOs and associations specialized in Latin America from Germany, Austria, Belgium, Spain, France, Netherlands and United Kingdom.
