Blumtritt, Andrea. Translocality and Gender Dynamics: The Pareja and the Thakhi System in Bolivia . p. 3-16 Bolivia
Género / Trasformación / Aymara / Translocalidad / Instituciones
Siglo XX | Siglo XXI

Summary

The article focuses on the transformation of gender roles and concepts of the Bolivian Aymara. It analyses gender-specific participation in a rural institution, the so-called thakhi or ‘path of duties', which manifests the cosmological structure that provides the cultural context of gender relations in Aymara society. It guides and reflects human behaviour based on cultural norms. However, ongoing mobility in the context of migration has led to translocally organised lives that are shaped by different horizons of local experience. The example of an evangelical preacher illustrates how established concepts may change in this context.

Normas sociales / Género / Oferta de trabajo femenino / Negociación en los hogares
Siglo XXI

Summary

This article studies the mechanisms by which social norms regarding wives' participation in salaried employment are enforced in two towns of the Tehuacán region in Mexico, using information gathered from in-depth interviews with wives and husbands and a survey of married women. First, social norms influence individuals' preferences through the internalisation of moral arguments concerning right or wrong behaviour and through social sanctions applied by groups in the society. Second, moral arguments are used by spouses in intra-household bargaining about wives' paid work in order to validate particular positions. Third, local organisations such as schools may also put demands on individuals that reinforce social norms.

Siglo XX | Siglo XXI

Summary

Based on quantitative and qualitative data collected from different generational cohorts, this article reveals a progressive tendency over the last 70 years towards joint household decision-making regarding land and housing in a rural municipality in the Colombian Andes. This shift is linked to changing social norms relating to household headship. It highlights the need to acknowledge diverse realities in the Latin American context and to avoid stereotypes of rigid gender divides and women's privation and ‘powerlessness’ in rural communities.

Siglo XXI

Summary

This article explores how gendered roles and identities are being negotiated in the context of rural development interventions, using the case study of women's group-based craft production in the Puno region of the Southern Peruvian Andes. It argues that membership of producer groups has had positive effects on women's self-esteem and, at least in some cases, on their relationships with their male partners. However, the transformative potential of rural development interventions targeting women may be limited by cultural norms that continue to define gender roles in relation to male domination and female subordination.

Summary

This paper argues that there is an implicit morality in state social policies that govern access to social protection. It presents some selected findings from a case study carried out in 2007 in a rural community in Michoacan, Mexico and, using a qualitative approach, examines how the moral discourses of obligation and sanction implicitly embedded in the notion of conditionality have gendered the interaction of rural poor households with state health institutions.

Allen, Alice. Shifting Perspectives on Marginal Bodies and Spaces: Relationality, Power, and Social Difference in the Documentary Films Babilônia 2000 and Estamira . p. 78-93 Brasil
Cine documental / Marginalidad / Poder / Espacio / Ética
Siglo XXI

Summary

Urban growth following large-scale rural migration especially in the latter half of the twentieth century has exacerbated conditions of extreme socio-economic inequality and social tensions in Brazilian cities. Whilst the themes of segregation and exclusion often dominate discourse surrounding marginalised urban spaces, this article explores the significance of interrelatedness and interconnectivity as mechanisms for dialogue in the films Babilônia 2000 (2000) and Estamira (2004). As documentaries that counterbalance dominant trends in cultural production they also provide a useful lens through which to analyse the power dynamics at work within the filmmaking process and their relation to existing social hierarchies.
