Abstract:

This essay provides a study of a collection of unpublished letters between João Cabral de Melo Neto and fellow Modernist poet, and literary master, Murilo Mendes (1901–1975). The epistolary exchange helps to map the biographical and literary journeys of these two authors. The friendship and literary dialogues between these two distinctive voices provide insight into their points of contact — one example of which is their unconditional passion for Spain and Spanish culture. Cabral's reflections on flamenco, for instance, help us increase our understanding of his poetics, and we find a significant group of letters covering the origins of his collection Quaderna, a book which he dedicated to Murilo Mendes.
