Master programme in Latin American Studies

The Master’s program in Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary program that provides in-depth knowledge of the region’s economic, social, legal and political conditions from a perspective that emphasizes the importance of knowledge of the history, language and culture for understanding the social processes. The Program highlights the importance of seeing Latin America in a global perspective, and to understand the region based on its interaction with the rest of the world. In addition to the study of Latin America as a whole the opportunity will be given to focus on individual themes and geographical areas of the continent on the basis of their specific dynamics. Social and cultural theories are studied and applied on cases from region.

The programme offers a combination of compulsory and individually chosen courses that together cover a diverse set of areas within the field of social science research on Latin America, around issues such as: human rights, gender and inequalities, indigenous and ethnic movements, sustainable development, regional integration and political systems. The programme is intended to provide an interdisciplinary understanding of the main developments in Latin America, applying scientific methods related to social sciences and area studies.

Students have the opportunity of spending a semester at a foreign university and/or doing fieldwork/internship in Latin America. The programme ends with an independent research project of 30 credits which provides opportunities for both thematic and regional specialization. Moreover, the students will also be able to participate on our Erasmus exchange programmes, with our partners from different European Universities.
